A Virtual Machine (VM) is a compute resource that uses software instead of a physical computer to run programs and deploy apps. One or more virtual “guest” machines run on a physical “host” machine.  Each virtual machine runs its own operating system and functions separately from the other VMs, even when they are all running on the same host.

Solaris Image backups are effortlessly supported by Zmanda. Oracle database control files are backed up by Volume Shadow Copy Service snapshots. With Zmanda, the backed-up files are referred to as Snapshot Control files. This snapshot control file is restored on the Oracle machine during restore and is used for manual recovery.

The license to use Solaris is included when you purchase Solaris servers from Oracle or an Oracle Authorized reseller. When used on the same hardware and including support, Solaris is typically less expensive. Solaris generally wins the speed competition, particularly when considering multiple CPUs and cores. Solaris has proven its capabilities through rigorous testing in a wide range of environments. Installation, maintenance and updates are extremely easy to manage. The Solaris 10 is certified as a secure program.

At Zmanda, we offer Solaris 10 backup and restore solutions, we also support OpenSolaris/Solaris 11 with end-to-end backup solutions across Solaris servers.  

Through the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), industry partners can still gain access to the in-development Solaris source code. Source code for the open source components of Solaris 11 is available for download from Oracle.
