AWS S3 encrypts data by default, and Zmanda adds an extra layer of encryption during transfer and storage.

Zmanda uses AWS S3 Object Locking in compliance mode to make backups immutable. Once locked, the data cannot be altered or deleted until the retention period expires—even if credentials are compromised.

AWS S3 object locking is a feature that prevents objects from being overwritten or deleted for a specified retention period. It adds an extra layer of protection against ransomware and accidental changes.

  • Compliance mode: Once enabled, no user—including root—can delete or modify the locked object until the retention period expires. This is the most secure option and is supported by Zmanda.
  • Governance mode: Allows certain privileged users to override retention settings if necessary. Zmanda does not support governance mode.

Compliance mode ensures that even if an attacker gains access to your AWS credentials, they cannot delete or modify your backup data during the retention period.

Object locking can be configured when setting up AWS S3 storage templates in Zmanda. You can define retention periods for critical files while leaving transient files unlocked.
