Zmanda Client for MS SQL uses the Microsoft Volume Shadow Services to back up the SQL database(s) and logs. Depending on the service enabled on the server, ZWC uses either the SQL Server VSS Writer or the MSDE Writer.

When the Zmanda Client for Windows is configured and licensed for Microsoft SQL backup, it uses the Microsoft Volume Shadow Services to back up SQL database(s) and logs. Depending on which, service is enabled on the server, ZWC uses either the SQL Server VSS Writer or the MSDE Writer. ZWC does not use the MS-SQL API for SQL database backup.
ZWC performs an incremental backup of databases and transaction log files just as it does any other file system backup (based on modification time). ZWC does not support transaction log based SQL backup because this mechanism is not supported either by MSDE or the SQL Server.
ZWC does not truncate transaction logs after a SQL database backup. If you wish to truncate transaction logs after a SQL backup, this can be accomplished using a post-backup plugin

Amanda is designed to handle large numbers of clients and data, yet is reasonably simple to install and maintain. It scales well up and down, so small configurations, even a single client, are possible. There are many users who back up just a single client that is also the Amanda server. On the other hand, many Amanda users backup hundreds and even thousands of file systems (there could be multiple file systems per protected system) to a large tape library with multiple drives.
