Introduction to Zmanda Backup and Recovery Solutions

A New User Interface is Coming to the Zmanda Network

Zmanda is pleased to announce that we will be rolling out a new user interface for users on January, 11th 2020.

You can get a preview of the new UI at

We are committed to making sure that every user has a great experience using Zmanda Backup Solutions.  This new UI is meant to improve the customer experience, simplify site navigation, and make it faster to log in to your Zmanda account.

Updates to the New User Interface

One of our main priorities is to make the user experience as easy as possible. We want to take the guesswork out of backup.  We have updated the look and feel to the site by incorporating Zmanda brand colors and graphics. This updated look gives the site a more modern look while still being easy to use.

Changes to Login Screen

The first major change that you will notice is the login screens. See the side by side comparisons below.

Updates to Navigation

Our major priority was to make things easier to find. In the new UI, all of your important information is right there upon logging in. You are able to quickly see what licenses are downloaded and being used, as well as any important notifications that may require your immediate attention. We also made locating license downloads easier than ever by dedicating an entire section titled “Downloads”. In this section, you can easily find information on all of your license downloads; including expiration dates.

New Linux Versions Supported by Zmanda Backup and Recovery Software

Following the 3.6 release, we have updated our Linux client systems to support new operating system versions for CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Debian. The Zmanda Linux Client provides a reliable, cost-effective solution to protect your Linux systems against data loss. Zmanda Linux Clients interface seamlessly with the Zmanda Management Console, enabling administrators to use one intuitive, point-and-click interface to back up your infrastructure.

Please refer to the documentation for supported platforms and installation guide for new client binaries.

A few highlights of our most popular capabilities we are bringing onto the new operating clients:

  • Flexible Media Options
    • Choose from a wide range of media for backup, including tape, tape libraries, disks (DAS, NAS, SAN, RAID), optical jukeboxes, and online storage including Amazons S3.
  • Backup Fault Tolerance
    • Zmanda gracefully skips systems (e.g. laptops) that cannot be backed up in a particular run and adds them to the next backup run.
  • Intelligent Scheduler
    • A unique scheduler automatically determines backup levels to optimize network and storage usage.

A more comprehensive review is here.

Alongside these new capabilities, our open source development and distribution model enables us to deliver the highest quality backup software such as Amanda Enterprise and Zmanda Recovery Manager for MySQL at a fraction of the cost of software from proprietary vendors. Our simple-to-use yet feature-rich backup software is complemented by top-notch services and support expected by enterprise customers.

Given the ever-evolving nature of today’s cyber-threats, Zmanda is also constantly enhancing data retention policies.

Together these planned enhancements underscore Zmanda’s drive to deliver complete cyber protection for partners and customers alike – ensuring the safety, accessibility, privacy, authenticity, and security of data (Five Vectors of Cyber Protection). Zmanda helps their service providers, customers overcome ever-evolving backup requirements, and the rising costs associated with those trends.  In short, Zmanda focuses on delivering secure, easy and efficient cyber protection solutions.

Oops, I Deleted My MySQL Binary Logs

There are times when we are exhausted because of a long day and we end up making mistakes, which end up costing the entire team a lot of time.

Yesterday, I was testing various backup and recovery methods supported by ZRM, a MySQL backup service for an upcoming release. ZRM for MySQL requires binary logging to be enabled on the MySQL server. I ran out of disk space during testing and removed the binary logs.

Accidentally, I deleted the last binary log used by MySQL server and MySQL server uses the most recent binary log to run its daemon.

Short version – I could not start MySQL server at all.

Recover MySQL binary logs: Stack trace when trying to start the server

$service mysqld start

061031 17:38:48 mysqld started

061031 17:38:48 InnoDB: Started; log sequence number 14 1645228884

/usr/libexec/mysqld: File ‘/var/lib/mysql/mysql-bin.000017’ not found (Errcode: 2)

061031 17:38:48 [ERROR] Failed to open log (file ‘/var/lib/mysql/mysql-bin.000017’, errno 2)

061031 17:38:48 [ERROR] Could not open log file

061031 17:38:48 [ERROR] Can’t init tc log

061031 17:38:48 [ERROR] Aborting

061031 17:38:48 InnoDB: Starting shutdown…

061031 17:38:51 InnoDB: Shutdown completed; log sequence number 14 1645228884

061031 17:38:51 [Note] /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown complete

061031 17:38:51 mysqld ended

Thanks to Aishwarya for giving me ideas on how to resolve the problem. The binary log index file ( /var/lib/mysql/mysql-bin.index) stores information about most recent binary log file. Deleting the index file solves the problem. Of course, I had backups of the database using ZRM for MySQL and I could recover to any point in time before the binary log deletion.

Bottom line: Do not delete the most recent binary log file to save disk space and do regular backups.  ZRM is preferred and here’s a link for more information
